Fighting for the Coast Guard

Over 1,200 members of the Oregon Coast Guard have been furloughed or are working without pay. Like many Americans, our Coast Guard personnel often don't have enough in savings to cover basic living expenses and an entire month's bills without receiving the paychecks they've earned. Our Coasties shouldn't have to think about how to pay their mortgages while performing rescues and putting their lives on the line. That is why I've introduced the Pay Our Coast Guard Parity Act which would ensure that reserve and active duty members of the Coast Guard are paid during the shutdown.

Earlier this week, a crabbing boat sank off the coast of Newport, Oregon and three lives were lost. This tragedy further highlights the need to ensure that our first responders are fully funded and have access to the resources they need. I will continue to fight for these men and women who protect our coastlines every day. They deserve the pay they've earned and deserve to rest assured that they can provide for themselves and their families.

Peter DeFazio's common-sense proposals aim to create good-paying jobs, expand access to affordable health care and develop options outside of the for-profit marketplace, restore economic and educational opportunities, hold government accountable and tip the scales of inequality back in favor of hard-working Oregonians.
