🎓 Hats off to you 🎓

I want to congratulate graduates everywhere, from preschool to PhDs. The future is bright because of you.

As the son of a high school teacher and wrestling coach, I saw my father work tirelessly to have a positive impact on his student's lives. He instilled in me the values of hard work, perseverance, and giving back to the community.

Above all, he valued education. But the high cost of higher education is making that ideal out of reach for too many.

Everyone in this country should have the opportunity to pursue a degree without an undue burden of student loan debt!

Instead of accepting pay raises in Congress (which I have consistently voted against) I've dedicated foregone raises to fund scholarships in Oregon for dislocated workers.

Today, I've fully funded 237 scholarships that have supported members of our community.

In 1990, Don Grotting, a father of two lost his job when one of the largest plywood plants in the U.S. shutdown. He was at a crossroads. Don decided to go back to school while working evenings as a janitor. He received the DeFazio scholarship and I'm honored to say that it helped him achieve his dream of a brighter future. Now, Don is a school superintendent here in Oregon.

We must do everything to expand access to quality, affordable education for everyone!

Earlier this month, I introduced two bills – the HIGHER ED Act and the AID Act – to make college more affordable without saddling students with thousands in unnecessary debt. The HIGHER ED Act also simplifies the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, to support our graduates who give back to their communities.

I'm proud of my record fighting for our future. I've long said that education is our best, and most important investment – for our country, our community, and our families.

As Independent as Oregon.

Peter DeFazio's common-sense proposals aim to create good-paying jobs, expand access to affordable health care and develop options outside of the for-profit marketplace, restore economic and educational opportunities, hold government accountable and tip the scales of inequality back in favor of hard-working Oregonians.
