A massive win-win for adult-use cannabis

Day by day, law by law, we're making life better for local business owners in Oregon.

The latest? The House recently passed a bill that has the potential to turn the cannabis industry on its head – for the better.

Currently, cannabis shops, growers, and related companies cannot access banking services. They're treated like criminals in their own states, where voters have legalized adult-use cannabis. This means that these local businesses must rely on cash for all of their business functions. They also must use cash to pay bills which poses a security risk to workers when they need to travel to government offices in Salem during tax season.

Under our new law, that would change. With access to legal banking services like credit unions, and a new ability to attract investors, the cannabis industry can continue to safely grow in states where it's legal – all while supporting communities, schools, and so much more with the taxes they generate.

It would be a massive win-win in Oregon. The next step, of course, is tricky: passing the Senate, where inaction is too often business-as-usual.

For now, however, we move forward. And I'm proud to have co-sponsored this bill to make this long-awaited win a reality.

Join me on Facebook. Let's discuss the next steps and talk about common-sense reforms the adult-use cannabis industry needs.

Peter DeFazio's common-sense proposals aim to create good-paying jobs, expand access to affordable health care and develop options outside of the for-profit marketplace, restore economic and educational opportunities, hold government accountable and tip the scales of inequality back in favor of hard-working Oregonians.
