Eugene, Oregon— OR-04 Republican candidate Alek Skarlatos just expanded his war on women’s health rights, during Friday’s congressional debate he was recorded on video saying he supports defunding Planned Parenthood, in addition to recently saying 'go for it' on overturning Roe v. Wade, which is the law of the land. Repealing Roe v. Wade and defunding Planned Parenthood would dramatically slash access to health care providers amid a pandemic, and endanger the health of the nearly 400,000 women who live in Oregon’s 4th Congressional District.

“Skarlatos is a threat to reproductive health care. By admitting his intent to repeal Roe v. Wade, Skarlatos and defund Planned Parenthood, Skarlatos has declared war on women’s choice, and become a clear danger to critical health care services that hundreds of thousands of women in our community depend on. Skarlatos supports defunding Planned Parenthood, even though they provide critical health care, including birth control and cancer screenings for thousands of Oregon women. He is also backed by the extremist organization, Oregon Right to Life, a group that opposes a woman’s right to abortion even in cases of rape or incest. Skarlatos received $5,000 in campaign contributions from Huck PAC, which only supports candidates who ‘are unequivocally pro-Life. Our district deserves a representative who has been and will continue to protect access to affordable health care and women’s choice, not endanger it,” said Carly Gabrielson, Congressman Peter DeFazio’s Campaign Manager.

While Alek Skarlatos wages war on women’s health rights, Congressman Peter DeFazio believes it's wrong for politicians to use women’s health to score political points. He has always fought to protect women’s choice. He stood up to the GOP when they voted to defund Planned Parenthood and when they tried to let employers deny coverage for birth control. He will always defend women’s health rights and believes that only a woman, not politicians, should be allowed to decide what is best for her health.

Background:

During the OR-4 Congressional Debate which aired Friday, October 16, 2020, Skarlatos said “I do not believe in federal funding for Planned Parenthood.”

At a ‘Lane County Meet and Greet the Candidates’ event in Creswell, OR on October 3, 2020, Skarlatos said, “I think Trump’s Supreme Court pick is perfect, I think she’s the right person at the right time for the right job and I think she’s excellent and hopefully we can get her confirmed shortly and as far as Roe v. Wade, I mean that’s a question way above my pay grade. If Amy was here you’d have to ask her, yeah, I think, I think we might, we might be able to do it but there might be a big backlash. So, for political reasons, we might have to think twice about that, but at the same time, if we can do it, we should probably go for it.”

As Independent as Oregon.

Peter DeFazio's common-sense proposals aim to create good-paying jobs, expand access to affordable health care and develop options outside of the for-profit marketplace, restore economic and educational opportunities, hold government accountable and tip the scales of inequality back in favor of hard-working Oregonians.
