Eugene, Oregon— Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR) today released a statement on the confirmation of President Trump’s nominee, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, to the U.S. Supreme Court, sounding the alarm on the threat her confirmation poses to affordable health care, women’s choice, civil rights and much more for hundreds of thousands of Oregonians.

“The confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett just eight days before Election Day is a cynical, brazen power grab by Senate Republicans. The first confirmation in recent history without any bipartisan support, Barrett’s confirmation flies in the face of the over 64 million Americans who have already voted and the millions more who are in the process of casting their ballots. Barrett’s confirmation cements a 6-3 conservative majority on the Court, which will be disastrous for affordable health care, including protections for pre-existing conditions, reproductive health, the environment, labor rights, civil rights, voting rights, LGBTQ rights, and more. With the Supreme Court set to hear arguments in just two weeks on Trump's case to gut the Affordable Care Act, health care for 20 million Americans, and 135 million Americans with pre-existing conditions, is now at the mercy of this right-wing Court. We must deliver an overwhelming defeat to the GOP on Election Day so that a Democratic majority in Congress can continue to serve as a last wall of defense against those who would strip these critical rights,” said Congressman Peter DeFazio.

As Independent as Oregon.

Peter DeFazio's common-sense proposals aim to create good-paying jobs, expand access to affordable health care and develop options outside of the for-profit marketplace, restore economic and educational opportunities, hold government accountable and tip the scales of inequality back in favor of hard-working Oregonians.
