Year after year, bit by bit, the United States has become more entwined in what soldiers call the forever war.
Many of our friends and neighbors have known this war their entire adult lives. It has defined the modern American experience.
And that's why we have an opportunity to end it, right now.
The President has the authority and responsibility to review troop deployments and strategize for our future. In 2021, that means dialing back and then ending the forever war our country continuously finds itself in.
At the same time, here in Congress, it's up to us to be the voice of the American people, to declare once more that enough is enough. I've led the effort to reassert that the power to declare and wage war belongs where in the hands of the elected leaders in Congress, as dictated in the Constitution. This year it's no different.
The decision to put our troops in harm's way is too important to rest with any one person – Republican or Democrat.
We can be so much better, invest in so much more at home, and show that much more leadership around the world... but only when we start to truly draw back our military commitments overseas.
So please, join me in urging President Joe Biden to review all options to end this forever war.
