Transportation should be green

This is what the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) had to say about my bill:

"This historic legislation is the kind of bold approach we need to tackle our crises of racial inequity and climate change. This bill will provide the investments we need in transit, safe streets, vehicle charging stations, and reconnecting communities divided by highways.

"Transportation is the largest source of carbon emissions, so addressing climate in this legislation is crucially important. In order to create good jobs and build the clean economy of the future, Congress must take up the American Jobs Plan so we address climate and inequity comprehensively."

We must build a 21st century transportation network that moves people and goods safely and efficiently and reduces harmful carbon pollution. I wrote the Investing in a New Vision for the Environment and Surface Transportation in America (INVEST) Act to do just that. In fact, the Natural Resources Defense Council called the bill "possibly the greenest transportation bill yet."

And I'm going to keep it that way; I'm watching closely as the Biden Administration tries to find common ground with Senate Republicans on the American Jobs Plan. The president must not water down the plan to appease Senate Republicans who aren't coming to the table in good faith.

We need a big, bold AND green infrastructure plan. Period.

I'm pleased to share that early Thursday morning, the INVEST in America Act passed the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee with bipartisan support! Now the bill heads to the House floor for a vote.

President Biden must hold strong on his bold plan to rebuild our nation's infrastructure, and that includes making corporations pay their fair share in taxes. That includes following guidance from scientists. That includes building the America that our grandchildren and their grandchildren deserve.

I will continue pressing for a big, bold and green infrastructure plan that meets not merely this moment, but the next one. Anything less is not enough to get the job done right. And we need to get this right.
