We must protect the Oregon Coast 🌊🌊

The Pacific Ocean is the economic engine of Oregon's coastal communities. From fishing and shellfish, to recreation and tourism, Oregon's coastal communities depend on a healthy ocean to thrive. Our oceans also bear the brunt of climate change and absorb 30 percent of the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere.

If it weren't for the oceans, we'd be in big, big trouble.

That's why I wholeheartedly support the COAST Research Act, a bill from my colleague Rep. Suzanne Bonamici that will help our coastal communities adapt to climate change. The bill will make significant investments into research of the acidification of our Pacific Ocean and will give us a better understanding of how we can mitigate the damage done to marine life by carbon pollution and ocean acidification.

The oceans are taking a lot of heat for us. It's time we step up to protect our oceans.

We've already seen the devastating impacts ocean acidification has had on Oregon's shellfish industry. While we've made some investments into the research of ocean acidification, we haven't gone far enough. The COAST Research Act will ramp up this critical research so we can make sure our coastal communities have the tools needed to adapt to our ever-changing climate.

I love the Oregon Coast. I know you do too. It's hands down one of my favorite places on the entire planet. I promise you this: I'm going to do everything in my power to protect it for future generations.
