Peter DeFazio is the leader we need to take on a partisan, dysfunctional Washington that rigs the system to benefit the wealthy and special interests. Peter DeFazio stands up for what we believe in. DeFazio's common-sense proposals aim to create good-paying jobs, restore economic and educational opportunities, hold government accountable and tip the scales of inequality back in favor of hard-working Oregonians.

Peter DeFazio demands that the Veterans Administration serve veterans as they did for our country. He led the charge to improve VA health care and secured funding for a new clinic for local vets. After complaints of poor care, mismanagement, and whistleblower retaliation at the Roseburg VA, DeFazio demanded investigations that resulted in the removal of senior bureaucratic officials and improved health care for Oregon's veterans.

Health Care

Peter DeFazio's solutions address health care costs by expanding coverage, creating options outside of the for-profit insurance industry, protecting consumers, and strengthening Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

A woman’s right to choose is a private, personal decision and needs to stay that way. Peter DeFazio understands there is a lot on the line with Supreme Court nominations and will do everything in his power to fight the nominations of those willing to overturn Roe vs. Wade. This issue was resolved decades ago and we cannot go back to the days of back-alley abortions.

In 2014, Peter DeFazio was elected to the powerful position of Ranking Member on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, which has jurisdiction over airports, highways, pipelines, public transit, seaports and railroads, as well as the Coast Guard and FEMA. In that position, DeFazio will continue to fight for investments that result in job creation, increased safety, economic efficiency and strategic growth.

DeFazio believes that investment in our transportation infrastructure is critical to sustaining good-paying jobs and a strong American economy. He has a plan to invest billions of dollars in our nation’s crumbling roads, bridges, harbors, and airports and create thousands of good-paying jobs in construction, technology and engineering.

DeFazio has introduced three pieces of common sense, bipartisan legislation that will help address our crumbling infrastructure without adding to the deficit. The first bill, “A Penny for Progress” will raise more than $500 billion to improve our Nation’s highways, bridges and public transit systems by indexing the gas and diesel user fees and capping the increase at 1.5 cents per year. The second bill, “Unlocking the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund” will provide more than $18 billion to improve our Nation’s coastal and inland harbors over the next decade by ensuring that all the revenue collected through the existing Harbor Maintenance Tax goes towards harbor maintenance. The final bill, “Renewing America’s Airport Infrastructure Act” will generate billions of much needed revenue to rebuild America’s airports by lifting the outdated cap on the passenger facility charge that airports may choose to collect to improve capacity, reduce noise and stimulate competition between airlines.

Most recently, as the top Democrat on the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, DeFazio was instrumental in passing the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization of 2018, which includes critical safety improvements and consumer protections such as prohibiting an airline from involuntary bumping a passenger after the passenger has boarded, prohibiting the use of cell phones for voice communications during flight, requiring FAA to review whether all passengers can safely evacuate within the 90 second requirement, and directing FAA to set minimum dimensions for passenger seats. In addition, he worked to ensure passage of the Water Resources Development Act of 2018, which will allow for improvements to our Nation’s ports, inland waterways, locks, dams, flood protection, and ecosystem restoration.

DeFazio has voted against every congressional pay raise and has refused to accept raises. Instead, he uses the money to fund scholarships at five Oregon community colleges because he believes that everyone should have access to education without crippling debt. By the end of 2018, DeFazio will have funded 270 scholarships.

As Independent as Oregon.

Peter DeFazio's common-sense proposals aim to create good-paying jobs, expand access to affordable health care and develop options outside of the for-profit marketplace, restore economic and educational opportunities, hold government accountable and tip the scales of inequality back in favor of hard-working Oregonians.
